The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre of the Federal University of Lafia (FuLafia) has officially unveiled the University’s Artificial Intelligence Policy, AI Blueprint, and Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s digital transformation agenda.
The unveiling took place on 16 July 2026 during the formal handover ceremony from the outgoing Director of the AI Centre, Prof. Joseph Dlama Zira, to the newly appointed Acting Director, Dr. Mohammed A. Mohammed. The event brought together members of the AI Committee and other key stakeholders who have contributed to the development of the University’s AI ecosystem.
The newly unveiled documents provide a comprehensive framework to guide the ethical, responsible, and effective adoption of Artificial Intelligence across teaching, research, administration, and community engagement within the University. The AI Policy promotes responsible AI governance, data privacy, research integrity, intellectual property protection, quality assurance, and institutional compliance.
The AI Blueprint outlines the strategic direction for the growth and sustainability of the Centre, including its vision of becoming a leading centre of excellence in AI research, innovation, training, and application. It also provides the organisational structure, implementation strategy, and roadmap for expanding AI capacity within the University.
Similarly, the Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence establish standards for the ethical and responsible use of AI technologies by staff and students, ensuring that AI supports academic excellence while upholding integrity and accountability.
Speaking during the ceremony, the outgoing Director, Prof. Joseph Dlama Zira, congratulated Dr. Mohammed A. Mohammed on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to consolidate the achievements of the Centre. He encouraged the new Acting Director to prioritise institution-wide sensitisation on the AI Policy and Guidelines, expand AI training programmes, strengthen strategic partnerships, and accelerate efforts towards establishing the University as a national centre of excellence in Artificial Intelligence.
Under the leadership of the Acting Director, the AI Centre is expected to intensify AI awareness campaigns, organise staff and student capacity-building programmes, strengthen collaborations with government agencies and industry, and implement initiatives that position FuLafia as a leading hub for Artificial Intelligence research, innovation, and digital transformation in Nigeria and across Africa.
